This work examines the causes and consequences of volatility in the regular processes of a logistic network. On the basis of the findings, a concept for cooperative planning and control using software agents is proposed and evaluated in a simulation environment in comparison to a sequence control based on the FIFO principle. The focus is on examining the effectiveness of a dynamic urgency assessment for prioritizing orders.

In this work, we present a modelling approach in order to depict service rules holistically. The developed model is called multi-queue system with multiple departure streams (MQSMDS). The MQSMDS is modelled as a discrete time Markov chain. On the basis of a numerical study, the system characteristics are evaluated. The results of this work enable a rapid and low-cost analysis of material handling and production systems as well as a fast and easy identification of suitable service rules.

Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are a flexible alternative to rigid conveyor technology. Based on challenges of AGVs, this work presents corresponding design patterns. The patterns consider the topics modularity, safety, human-machine interaction, navigation and decentralized control. On the one hand, they serve to structure solutions and on the other hand, they facilitate the development process of automated guided vehicles.

A general analytical travel time model for the quadruple command cycle in double deep storage systems with a dual capacity load handling device is formulated and validated by means of a simulation model. Various routing and sequencing strategies are composed. A simulation model is used to compare strategies for differnt AS/RS configurations and settings to assess them in consideration of real-world cases. For selected strategies, analytical formulations are derived.

Lean management describes a set of methods combined with a management philosophy which aims at eliminating waste in logistics processes. In production logistics, lean is already widespread and applied successfully. Research has shown that lean also works in a warehousing environment. In transport logistics, lean is still at a low level of maturity in both research and practice. This work contributes to closing this gap by introducing Heijunka leveling to transport logistics.

Shuttle-based storage and retrieval systems (SBS/RSs) are an important part of today‘s warehouses. In this work, a new approach is developed that can be applied to model different configurations of SBS/RSs. The approach is based on the modeling of SBS/RSs as discrete-time open queueing networks and yields the complete probability distributions of the performance measures.

Efficient inbound networks in the European automotive industry rely on a set of different transport concepts including milk runs - understood as regularly scheduled pickup tours. The complexity of designing such a mixed network makes decision support necessary: In this book we provide definitions, mathematical models and a solution method for the Milk Run Design problem and introduce indicators assessing the performance of established milk runs in relation to alternative transport concepts.

The fourth industrial revolution aims to transform production systems. In this work, Logical Time which is a control principle for distributed systems is transferred to material handling systems with decentralized control. The GridSorter, a modular sorter with grid-like structure, is chosen as showcase system. The system is proven to be deadlock-free and is robust against varying transport times. The time-window-based route reservation process is described as Iterative Deepening A*.

Transports within industrial logistics networks are planned strategically. Due to the existence of uncertainties an operational control of transports is necessary. Thereby, dispatchers are today not supported adequately. A control approach for dynamic, complex and multimodal transports is developed, which intends to support or automate the operational control. The approach has a decentral and heterarchical organization, in which the goods and means of transports are modeled as agents.

With the compact warehousing of goods, the main aim is to achieve the highest possible space utilisation rate. Automated compact warehouses only become profitable once they exceed a particular size and throughput. The alternative is to opt for low-cost ground storage systems. This book will examine various technical implementation methods that can be used to realise the GridFlow principle.
